Too many people in positions of power and influence, have something to hide

With all the amount of blogs, people, tweets, MP's, organisations etc calling for inquiries into abuse allegations, why is it taking so long for "the authorities" to take action? These allegations and revelations will not go away with the passing of time. The longer it takes to commence open,detailed investigations then the more the criticism and suggestions of too many people in positions of power and influence, having something to hide will gain credence.

Bryn Estyn in Wales, Haut de la Garenne in Jersey, Stoke Manderville, Leeds General, Police investigations abandoned due to "insufficient evidence" the extent of these allegations is breathtaking and the indications are that there are even more revelations to come. Public opinion demands that investigations must commence now and those responsible for the abuse, and those responsible for the subsequent cover up must be brought to account.
