Conservative splits reopen after Theresa May slaps down Philip Hammond.

Prime Minister Theresa May, completed the "hat trick" on Wednesday at "Questions to the Prime Minister". Following the disaster Turin speech and the even worse speech to Conservative party Conference, Theresa May probably came to the Commons with high expectations of dealing heavy blows to the Labour opposition with the support of a united cabinet and the baying, howling ranks of backbenchers as is normal at PMQ's behind her. Alas, in this expectation she will have been sadly disappointed as first Jeremy Corbyn and then her own back bencher's ripped into her on the question of Universal Credit and the hardships that this is causing both in delays in payments and the subsequent effects that this is having on families and rental payments and then on the subject of Brexit, which has been ripping the Conservative government apart for some time.

In response to a question on providing funding for the eventuality of a "No deal" exit, the Prime Minister contradicted the comments made earlier by Philip Hammond, by saying that she "has now set aside £250m to help prepare for Brexit". In an apparent slapping down of the Chancellor, who had signalled he wanted to wait until “the last point” before authorising spending on ‘no deal’ preparations and appeared unwilling to discuss further funds, comments which have resulted in calls for him to be sacked,  the Prime Minister shows complete ineptitude in her leadership not only on the question of Europe, but also on domestic issues such as welfare, housing, energy and education with "policies" being announced and then abandoned within days if not hours.

These differences again emphasises the chaos and divisions in government and cabinet, on the whole subject of Europe and our exit from the European Union. We now even have differing statements on the latest position in respect of the negotiations with the EU where on the one hand, David Davis stresses that good progress has been made whilst admitting that, "there is still work to do" and from the same podium Michel Barnier states that the discussions are deadlocked and later  Donald Tusk, the President of the European Council, and the heads of the EU states agreed the UK had not made “sufficient progress” on the withdrawal divorce terms.
Chaos, confusion and discord tinged with more than a hint of self interest, divide the cabinet and a wretched government at this watershed point in the history of the United Kingdom. I have argued before that the government is not acting in the interests of the British people as the country hurtles towards crashing out of the European Union without any "deal" being in place which will be a catastrophe for this country. The absence of any leadership from this government and in particular from Prime Minister May, coupled with her complete ineptitude for the task, is driving this country into a cul de cac of rapidly declining credibility in the world, falling productivity, increasing poverty, falling living standards and and polarisation of society. The true costs of conservative divisions are evident everywhere, and we can only speculate as to how bad things will become should this government remain in place.

Northern Ireland and Brexit. The return of "The Troubles"

Northern Ireland: police attacked in another night of disturbances | Northern Ireland | The Guardian When the "Brexit" debate was still filling our newspapers and our television screens, readers may remember why I had changed my mind since voting to leave at the referendum vote. Apart from the economic arguments, which had become crystal clear after peeling away all the lies and misrepresentations trotted out by Bozo Boris and his "Get Brexit Done" conspirators, there was always the problem of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Would it be possible to have a border between the European Union and the United Kingdom where people, goods and services could pass freely between the two nations without customs restrictions, tariffs, duties and all the other formalities? Would it be possible to have one part of the United Kingdom treated differently from other parts of the United Kingdom, particularly when Scotland for example had voted overwhe...

Enough of this hysterical nonsense

http://style.uk.msn.com/royal-baby/how-will-the-royal-baby-look-as-he-grows-up Media generated hysteria.                           This is too much. For the last 36 hours (thought it seems more like 36 days) there has been wall to wall news coverage, media and television comment and reporting, with Sky News taking first prize for frenzied minute by minute reporting from the Palace, the hospital, from a village somewhere in England, from the studio and anywhere else that Burley, Botting and company could stick a microphone into some obscure "celebrity's" face and ask for yet another banal quote. All this galvanising the mass hysteria of some elements of the public, (who the media would have you believe is the reaction of "the whole world",) with their flag waving, dancing, singing and cheering over what is after all, no more than a woman having a bab...

A perverse and rather sinister media obsession to discredit, smear and undermine Jeremy Corbyn

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/venezuela-jeremy-corbyn-blasted-for-not-condemning-president-maduro-a3606156.html#commentsDiv Venezuela: Jeremy Corbyn blasted for not condemning socialist President Nicolas Maduro as violent conflict escalates There is a perverse and rather sinister obsesseion with the media and particularly television "interveiwers", in seeking to secure from Jeremy Corbyn a "condemnation" of some person or organisation or event. This time it is connected with events in Venezuela and the actions of President Nicolas Maduro and the bloody crackdown on protests against the result of last weeks poll which inaugurated a constituent assembly . The media "stories" and the interrogation by the television interviewers, are as subtle as a sledgehammer being nothing more than a variation on the "Have you stopped beating your wife yet?" question, which so many repoters use in order for them to make themselves appear very ...
