The alternative is to dump it in landfill.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/first-food-waste-supermarket-uk-leeds-real-junk-food-project-a7317906.html The UK’s first food waste supermarket opens The food, which may otherwise have found its way to landfill, is used to feed 12,000 children a week. It is a sad reflection on our society that, in the 21st Century in the United Kingdom, there is a necessity for places like this and for Food-banks. We should all feel a sense of shame that we have allowed successive governments to create the environment where the only rapidly growing industries are those charities providing food welfare and even energy welfare in some places, to feed and shelter almost 1 million families in this country today.

Food banks are a growing industry in the United Kingdom

http://www.itv.com/news/wales/2016-05-23/this-food-bank-is-now-giving-out-emergency-credit-to-help-people-with-their-fuel-bills/ This food bank is now giving out emergency credit to help people with their fuel bills users can now also receive emergency credit for energy costs The only thing that seems to be growing in the Cameron/Osborne United Kingdom, is the increasing necessity for Food Banks. It is a criminal outrage that in this country, in the 21st Century, over 1 million people are reliant on these charities to feed their families. Austerity is not an economic necessity. It is a political choice.  Cameron and his wretched fragmented government will pay the price for their betrayal of ordinary people in favour of the rich.

The scandal of foodbanks now extends to fuel

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/poverty-forced-people-turn-food-5726219 Poverty forced people to turn to food banks and now it's forcing them into FUEL banks Peter Ward-Miller is forced to rely on a fuel bank   With even more cuts in government department budgets and welfare, this will become more and more common over the coming months and years. This government was elected on less than 37% of the vote and yet they can press ahead with their "austerity" programmes and inflict misery and desperation on millions. The gas and electricity companies announce price rises at least twice every year, together with increases in their profits while ordinary people go hungry and cold in their homes. This is a scandal and a disgrace perpetrated by a callous and uncaring government, more concerned with their own position and interests and their friends in industry who grow rich as a result of the austerity inflicted on ordinary people.  We should all feel sham...

Food banks and comments from people who should be ashamed.

http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/apr/22/food-bank-users-uk-low-paid-workers-poverty  More than a million people have used food banks in past year figures showing a 19% rise year-on-year is just the ‘tip of the iceberg’   This story should provoke outrage and shame, that in the first quarter of the 21st Century people are forced to use charities to feed their families. From some of the posts in the comments section however, it is clearly obvious that the policies of this govevernment and the associated propaganda, have suceeded in promoting an atmosphere of demonisation of foodbank users and divisions within our society. The bile and venom of many posters against those, many of whom are working but still qualify for benifits, who rely on food charites, is appaling, spiteful and ill informed. The place of foodbanks in our society is sadly a necessity and will not go away anytime soon. In fact it is clearly obvious that the numbers of our p...

The number of families dependent on foodbanks continues to grow,as the IMF and Germany praise Osborne.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/one-million-britons-using-food-banks-according-to-trussell-trust-10186142.html  Food banks: One million Britons will soon be using them, according to Trussell Trust   The figure of 1 million people relying on food banks is now almost reached. It has arrived rather sooner than many people predicted only months ago and is indicative of a scandal which indicates poverty in this country is increasing no matter what Osborne, the coaltion and the IMF may try to convince us about the economy is improving and that government economic policy is on the right track and that things are getting better. No matter what government statisiics, graphs, fig ures, "finacial organisations" or other experts may try to deceive us with, the reality is that more and more people are falling victim to the pernicious, vindictive and divisive policies of this wretched government and its idealogical campaign against ordinary peopl...

The struggle to find sufficient food.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/millions-of-britons-struggling-to-feed-themselves-and-facing-malnourishment-9946627.html     Millions of Britons struggling to feed themselves and facing malnourishment   Foodbanks relying on donations of food.   On December 20th, I blogged on the bigoted generalisations, unfortunately, all too common in today's greedy, selfish and prejudiced society, in respect of attitudes towards the poor, foodbanks, child poverty and the general demonisation of large sections of our society, by those all too ready to accept and believe the propaganda trotted out from the pages of the Daily Mail, Telegraph and other such rags, and the completely biased reporting of Wilcox and others on the BBC with Brazier and Boulton on the British version of Fox News. The “success” of divisive social policies maintained by successive governments, have now become the “flagship” of this current ConDem coalition and have been...

A scandal which continues to grow.

http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/11683374.People_turn_to_foodbanks_to_feed_their_families_over_Christmas/ People turn to foodbanks to feed their families over Christmas Foodbank volunteers "Hundreds of people (in Dorset,) will be turning to foodbanks to feed their families this Christmas. Instead of turkey with all the trimmings, hard-pressed families will be serving up tinned and dried foods this festive season."  Dorset Echo: 23rd December 2014.   Just one small part of scandal which has grown vastly over the past 5 years. In this country today, there are over 1 million people who are reliant on Food banks or other food charities, to feed their families this Christmas. The figure has grown significantly since last Christmas and shows no sign of reducing anytime soon. It is a scandal and a disgrace, which should shame us all for allowing such a situation to come about. The Foodbank charities and the volunteers working in them are doing a magnificent ...

A nation divided

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/two-nations-13m-brits-will-spend-12bn-on-panic-saturday-but-13m-others-across-the-country-will-spend-this-christmas-in-poverty-9937088.html     13m will spend £1.2bn on 'Panic Saturday', but 13m others across the country will spend this Christmas in poverty          In the first quarter of the 21st Century, it is a scandal and a disgrace that 13 million people are, no matter what measurement you choose to employ in establishing that figure, living in poverty in this country today. Over 1 million families reliant on Food-banks and other charities, 1 million in child poverty, hundreds of thousands of people homeless, or in inadequate accommodation, many people actually in work who earn less than the minimum wage or are on zero hour contracts, having to claim benefits, which are being further reduced by government cuts, are indicative of a fractured nation....

The continuing scandal of more people being forced to resort to using foodbanks

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/dec/08/tories-avert-rift-church-food-bank-report?commentpage=5 Tories seek to avert rift with Church of England over food bank report A foodbank in the United Kingdom in the year 2014. A church funded all-party report is published today,(8th December 2014), on the increased use of food banks in this country and warning that Britain is stalked by low pay, growing inequality, a harsh benefits section scheme and social breakdown. It is perhaps fitting that the report is published just two weeks before Christmas, highlighting the growing phenomena of food bank usage in the United Kingdom. The Tories have of course attempted to distance themselves from any blame associated with this scandal, with one minister claiming that the increased use of food banks is due to the greater publicity about their existence. The Department of Work and Pensions, remain adamant that the administration of the benefit system has littl...

The usage of Foodbanks continues to grow

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-29957695 Foodbank use for south west children 'quadruples since 2011' The Trussell Trust runs a charity which runs 28 Foodbanks across the South West   Lying deep amongst the news stories the last 12 months, is the ongoing story which refuses to go away. Largely ignored by the press and television media, possibly by accident but more likely to be on the directions of some mysterious government department, the continuing scandal of the increasing number of people reliant on food bank charities is the subject which the Department of Work and Pensions and various other government departments and of course the ConDem Coalition government, would really like to go away and by adopting a policy of “if we ignore the situation for long enough the problem will cease to exist, in any case the usual charities can provide a short-term solution to the short-term problem”, they can pretend that the scandal of people in t...

Poverty and poverty related illness shames us all.

http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/aug/30/child-poverty-link-malnutrition-rickets Rickets returns as poor families find healthy diets unaffordable.   Helping to prevent Rickets at a primary school in the 1950's    With their heads buried firmly in the sand (or some other location), the ConDem coalition government continue their drive for even greater austerity, and resolutely refuse to accept that their policies are forcing more and more families in this country to the point of poverty or even below the accepted definitions of poverty. Despite all the evidence to the contrary, the ever increasing reliance on food banks, now totaling in excess of 1 million people, the rise in poverty related illnesses, the increasing numbers of homeless creating different but never the less significant problems for our society, and all the published evidence from recognised charities and institutions, yet  the government repeat that we are on the right cour...

Foodbank usage grows to over 1 million people nationally.

http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/11298070.ECHO_INVESTIGATES__Food_bank_users_soar/#commentsList  The numbers of people reliant on foodbanks, continues to grow. More than i million people now rely on foodbanks.   The "forgotten" scandal of  the effect of the cuts and other austerity measures of this wretched ConDem coalition government. As other news has filled our headlines for some months, the plight of those who now rely on the distribution of food to feed themselves and their families has been pushed to the back pages or even ignored by the press and media. It is now reported that the number pf people reliant on foodbanks in Weymouth has increased fourfold in the last 12 months. In the South west generally, there has been a 78% increase in the number of foodbank users and nationally, the figure is even higher with now more than 1 million people regularly receiving food assistance from the Trussel Trust and the other foodbank providers. In this the 21st...

Threats and intimidation. The tools of Iain Duncan-Smith.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/exclusive-food-bank-charity-was-threatened-with-closure-by-ministers-aide-9533456.html Food bank charity ‘was threatened with closure by minister’s aide’ Andrew Selous, PPS to Iain Duncan Smith, Threats and intimidation by government to conceal the real scandal of foodbank reliance in this country. There seem to be no depths to which this ConDem coalition will not sink to cover up and distort the effects of their drive for austerity and the way in which peoples lives are being afflicted by hardship. Iain Duncan-Smith and his collaborators, should feel shame at their dogmatic policies which have led to and are perpetuating this outrage.  Mr Selous strongly denied having been the individual concerned.

These thieves should be put in prison.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/lord-hanningfield-claims-fiddle-expenses-3489778 Lord Hanningfield claims he had to fiddle expenses to look after his CHICKENS    Chicken enthusiast: Lord Hanningfield   Hanningfield, a former Tory frontbencher, was sentenced to nine months’ jail in 2011 over the last expenses scandal after being found guilty of falsely claiming for overnight stays in London. But he was out in less than three months and returned to the Lords the following year after repaying £30,000. "kicked out of Parliament for a year and forced to repay the money " If we actually put these thieves in prison for a while, it may deter other MP's and Peers stealing money from the taxpayers of this country.

Visiting a deserving pensioner?

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/apr/03/queen-vatican-gifts-pope Queen arrives in Vatican with gifts fit for a pope    The Queen gave the Pope a huge hamper filled with goods from royal estates                                                                 The Queen, (that is to say Queen Elizabeth 2), arrived with a hamper full of "goodies" when visiting  Jorge Mario Bergoglio, a 78 year old pensioner, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but now living in modest city accommodation in Rome. Mr Bergoglio received the gift when being visited by the Queen and her husband the Duke of Edinburgh. The hamper contained produce from the "Royal Estates" and included honey from Buckingham Palace gardens, whiskey from Balmoral and jams and chutney from Sandringham, one dozen eggs, assorted preserves...

The kindergarten of the House of Commons at Prime Minister's Questions.

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/04/02/pmqs-david-cameron-ed-miliband-muppets_n_5075307.html?utm_hp_ref=uk PMQs: David Cameron Calls Ed Miliband And Ed Balls 'The Two Muppets'    Pathetic behaviour by so called "responsible adults" in the weekly pantomime of PMQ's. The kindergarten of the House of Commons, brings politics into disrepute and feeds contempt for "politicians" into the public perception of running the country. These predominately public school constructs on both sides of the Commons, have brought their childish antics directly from the "playing fields" into Westminster, and actually believe that they are really clever, "landing blows" on their opponents and making political capital with insults, jibes and patronising comment, all to a background of baying, ya booing and raucous laughter from the back benches. An appalling weekly spectacle, which becomes even more ghastly every week...

Another Tory Bigot attacks foodbanks

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/03/26/food-banks-crawley-liam-marshall-ascough_n_5034541.html?utm_hp_ref=uk Extra Food Banks Aren't Needed Because Restaurants Are Busy, Says Tory Councillor  People aren't going hungry : Cllr Liam Marshall-Ascough Sometimes, it is hard to believe that that there are "people" in this country who still accept the myth that foodbanks are a consequence of "scroungers" preferring to live on charity rather than the result of government policies and delays in payment of essential  benefits. Last week it was Tebbit wading into the demonisation and general slurs in respect of Foodbanks and the people who use the charities. The Tebbit of "On your bike" fame. Tebbit, the lackey of Thatcher. Tebbit, the former airline pilot, who came to fame within the Tory party with his odious attacks on working people, immigrants, unemployed and the gay community a perfect lapdog in fact for the  grocers daughter from G...

The bumbling Lord Freud drops another clanger.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/food-banks-lord-freud-blundering-3222149 Tory Bedroom Tax minister questions why hungry people go to food banks Welfare Minister Lord Freud   Posh Tory Lord Freud first attracted my attention in July of last year, when I saw an article in the "Independant" under the heading of "Demand for food banks has nothing to do with benefits squeeze." Perhaps he should have had a quick read of this Blog of the same date date "A patronising out of touch Baron" (http://new-agenda2012.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/a-patronising-out-of-touch-baron.html) It seems that this political dinosaur with the privileged life has learned nothing in the last 12 months.

U-Turn by CPS in the case of stealing food from supermarket waste bins.

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/01/29/cps-iceland-bins_n_4688853.html?utm_hp_ref=uk 'Iceland Three' Will Not Face Charges For Taking Food From Supermarket Bins Iceland Foods   Yesterday, the Crown Prosecution Service said that the prosecution would continue as there was "significant public interest in prosecuting these three individuals". Clearly the "significant public interest" lasted less than 24 hours, which probably results from "the public" criticism, outrage and ridicule of the stupidity of the CPS bringing these charges in the first place. Someone at the CPS obviously spent a great deal of time rummaging through old legislation to find an obscure section of the 1824 Vagrancy Act under which to propose a prosecution. They would have been better employed reading "How to obtain common sense and how to apply it to your decision making". Today Baljit Ubhey from the Crown Prosecution Service ...

The heinous crime of stealing food from supermarket waste bins.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/men-charged-with-stealing-food-from-iceland-supermarket-bins-9091967.html Men charged with stealing food from Iceland supermarket bins Contents of a bin outside a village shop in Sussex Put on trial, charged under the 1824 Vagrancy Act, for "stealing" £33 of food from waste bins behind a supermarket. The Crown Prosecution Service said that the prosecution would continue as there was "significant public interest in prosecuting these three individuals". Perhaps the CPS should be informed that there is "significant public interest" in prosecuting a number of bankers, who fiddle interest rates, embezzle £millions, grow fat and rich on their ill gotten bonuses and other "perks" and benefit from "Golden Handshakes" when exposed. The public can be excused for believing that in today's sick capitalist system, stealing £33 worth of food from the waste bins of a supermarket, is a...
