Only one country has ever used nuclear weapons against the civilian population of another country.  A mushroom cloud from an atomic bomb rises over Nagasaki. At least 70,000 died in the Nagasaki attack, which came three days after another bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Nagasaki was only chosen because the original target, Kokura, was obscured by a cloud. Much of the city was flattened by the attack

August 9, 1945, Nagasaki. At 11:02, local time, for the second time in history, a nuclear device was detonated over a city. According to statistics found later, the death toll from the atomic bombing totaled 73,884,as well as another 74,909 injured, and another several hundred thousand diseased and dying due to fallout and other illness caused by radiation. It exploded about 1,625 ft (500m) above the ground and is believed to have completely destroyed the city, which is situated on the western side of the Japanese island of Kyushu. ...
