Not in my back yard.

http://jerseyeveningpost.com/news/2016/06/12/le-squez-housing-plan-cancelled-after-appeal/ Le Squez housing plan cancelled after appeal Some of the residents of Sarina Avenue, Le Squez Planning permission for States housing (or council hoses to anyone not living in Jersey), has been cancelled after local residents appealed on the grounds that the development would block the light into their gardens, There is a chronic housing shortage in Jersey in both the affordable homes and in the rented sectors. On an island only 9 miles by 5 miles, the average price of a 1 bedroom flat is £214k and a 3 bedroom house is £527k. (Figures from States facts. 2015). In Jersey, as in mainland UK, many families both now and in the future will never be able to afford to purchase a home, and consequently will be reliant on the provision of States Housing. Most people recognise the need for social housing. The question is where should it be developed?

Lenny Harper's investigation "negatively impacted on the force"

http://jerseyeveningpost.com/news/2016/05/20/police-regret-appointing-lenny-harper/ Police ‘regret’ appointing Lenny Harper "Top Cop" Lenny Harper Harper was not prepared to "Toe the official line" during his enquiries in his period in charge of the investigation into the historic child abuse. His enquiries led in many directions and upset ( or frightened) too many people who form the "establishment" in Jersey. A mouthpiece now trots out the absurd line that "Mr Harper had an ‘astonishing attitude’ to dealing with the media, which negatively impacted on the force", as part of the ongoing campaign to smear and undermine  the work Harper did during his time in Jersey. It clearly evidences, that in Jersey, the image of the States Police is of far more importance than establishing what events took place at Haute de la Garrene and other places across the island. Harper is being subjected to the same vilification and denigration that has ...

Meanwhile in Jersey.

The end of an era as the Living Legend finally shuts its doors   The centre, which opened on the site of the former Strawberry Farm in 1992 THE Living Legend – a once-popular tourist attraction enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers a year – has closed. Not many places (if any) left for us tourist to buy the very low quality very high priced tatty rubbish in the "Sale" which lasts all season. They should restore the "Strawberry Farm" to its former glory. http://jerseyeveningpost.com/news/2016/01/26/the-end-of-an-era-as-the-living-legend-finally-shuts-its-doors/ Fewer technical issues for new ferry expected in 2016 The £50 million vessel is currently in dry dock in Falmouth THE technical problems which have plagued Condor Liberation since it came into operation almost a year ago should be significantly reduced in 2016, one of the firm’s directors has said. You may be forgiven for thinking that in ...

The end of another "attraction"

http://jerseyeveningpost.com/news/2015/06/18/tourism-heyday-attraction-is-reduced-to-pile-of-rubble/         Tourism heyday attraction is a shell of its former self       Jon Morgan, was the custodian of the garden for many years         We new this place and its curator John Morgan, and Sandi his wife (who also made guest appearances in Bergerac) very well. We shared a taste for Indian or Italian food and spent many hours together in restaurants on the island. We have noted on recent visits that the bungalow has been derelict for quite a while. Sad to see the end of the Shell Garden attraction, which has now gone the same way as many other former attractions in Jersey.

Saved for nature

http://jerseyeveningpost.com/news/2014/07/02/saved-for-ever/#comments   The headland at Plémont could be owned by the National Trust for Jersey within weeks The Plemont headland It has been a good couple of days for the States. The decision to reject the Sunday trading trial (see post on that story) and now this agreement on the future of the Plemont headland, indicates (certainly in my opinion) , that there are occasions in the States Chamber when sanity rules and members come to the right decision for the right reasons. I have long argued that the Plemont headland is too valuable for the people of the island and for the visiting tourist to be handed to some developer to build very expensive and very exclusive homes for a very few privileged members of society. There are those (reflected in some posts on the Jersey Evening Post story page too) who argue that Jersey is a small island with a housing problem and that more homes are needed. I would certainly not...

The States have had a good week.

http://jerseyeveningpost.com/news/2014/07/01/states-close-the-door-on-sunday-shopping-move/#comments A trial scheme which would have allowed large shops to open on Sundays has been rejected by the States. States close the door on Sunday shopping I have never been in favour of Sunday trading, not on any religious grounds, but simply because the idea just does not sit well with me. It seems that to have one day in the week where shops are closed (living on the mainland, I personally would have them all closed, supermarkets too) is a sensible proposition. There has been a gradual erosion of "trading free" days over the years, until now the only days when shops are closed is Christmas Day and Easter Sunday. Even then, it is possible to see the odd shop somewhere or other, still open for business. There are those who argue "freedom of choice" or "convenience" or some other cliche to justify round the clock trading seven days per week. H...

More delays to the "Independent Jersey Care Inquiry" ?

Has the "Independent Jersey Care Inquiry" actually started?   The former children's home Haut de la Garenne On the 16th March last, I wrote in New Agenda under the title of,  "The prevarication and delay of the last three years is finally over?  ( http://new-agenda2012.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/the-prvarication-and-delay-of-last.html) "At last a starting date for the long delayed "Independent Jersey Care Inquiry" is set to begin on 3 April. It remains to be seen whether, over the next three weeks, any more "points" will be found which will "have to be clarified",  before the inquiry can actually begin."  There seems to be a distinct lack of media coverage in Jersey, as there has been no mention of the start of the inquiry, as far as I am aware, in the Jersey Evening Post, Channelonline tv, or any other media outlet that I am aware of. Has this long overdue inquiry been delayed yet again? It would be stretching the ...
