Showing posts with the label EU membership

After 6 months of dithering, the 12 point "plan" is revealed.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jan/17/theresa-may-britain-prime-minister-speech Prime minister gives tough speech outlining government’s 12 priorities for Brexit negotiations  Which ever way you may have voted in last year's referendum on continued membership of the European Union, one thing is today, in January of 2017, abundantly clear. The United Kingdom is in complete and utter chaos regarding our exit, or even non exit of the EU. There is no doubt that 17,410,742, (51.89%) of those voting, opted for Brexit, while 16,141,241 (48.11%) voted Remain. There is also no doubt that Cameron was completely unprepared for a Leave result, and quickly scurried off, standing down as first as Prime Minister and then as the MP for Witney, to do other things outside Parliament. The departure of Cameron left others to clean up the mess that the lack of planning and foresight had created, but unfortunately for the Country, the new Prime Minister and her party h...

Euphoric nonsense on the front pages of our national press.

http://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/741007/Article-50-MPs-approve-Government-amendment-begin-EU-divorce-end-March A very shabby climb down to avoid a telling defeat. It is difficult this morning to resist being overwhelmed and taken it by the euphoric nonsense spewing forth in the headlines on the front pages of certain of our national newspapers, who have have historically been less than enthusiastic on the question of the United Kingdom's membership of the European Union. The Mail, the Telegraph, the Express and the rest of the usual suspects scream out at us with such hysterical absurdities as, "Victory for PM. Commons back May on Brexit", or "Hooray. MP's say Yes to EU exit" or "MP's hand May a blank cheque for Brexit" and perhaps the most preposterous headline of them all screeching, "BREXIT VICTORY: Remoaner plot CRUSHED as MPs vote to APPROVE triggering of Article 50". The standards of British newspaper reportin...

Iain Duncan-Smith confuses the roles of "government" with "parliament"

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/nov/15/supreme-court-judges-views-on-article-50-legislation-anger-leave-campaigners Judge hints at legal hitch that could seriously delay Brexit With a curious piece of “double talk”, Iain Duncan-Smith argues that Parliament rather than judges should decide in respect of triggering Article 50, but goes on to say that Government must use its “executive powers”, to commence the process. Not for the first time in his checkered  political career, IDS is confused and seeks to bully his views onto others as he did during his infamous period as Work and Pensions Secretary at the DWP. His confusion arises either by accident or more probably design, in his belief that “government” and “parliament” are synonymous terms used to describe the mechanism of administering the country. They are not. For the benefit of Iain Duncan-Smith, and any others who may be under such a delusion, Parliament is the House of Lords and the House of Co...

A spiteful "Emergency Budget" which is already doomed to fall.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/eu-referendum-brexit-would-spark-30bn-in-spending-cuts-and-tax-rises-warn-george-osborne-and-a7082271.html 57 Tory MPs pledge to vote down George Osborne's post-Brexit budget If the "Remain" campaign were determined to destroy their own chances of winning next weeks referendum, they could not have chosen a more appropriate weapon to add to their already substantial armoury of fear and intimidation employed thus far, than to threaten a "punishment budget" should the nation vote "Leave", on the 23rd June. George Osborne is firmly in the "Remain" camp and yet has chosen to threaten retaliation against those people and groups that he  seeks the support of at the polls. Last week, threats to pensioners and others, now threats to the NHS and tax payers. All that Osborne has achieved with this latest tantrum of bile and spite, is to  incur the wrath of at least 60 Conservative MP's who wil...

Infantile tantrums from within the PLP

http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk/2016/06/if-brexit-happens-jeremy-corbyn-could-face-leadership-challenge If Brexit happens, Jeremy Corbyn could face a leadership challenge The stupidity of some political commentators, and certainly some of the Parliamentary Labour Party, is staggering in its hypocrisy and spiteful hostility. They scream that, "If Brexit wins the referendum vote, then it is Corbyn's fault and we shall stage a coup to oust him as leader". Crass absurdity, offered as a justification for yet another reason for rejecting the leadership vote of last year. These morons would serve the party (and themselves) better by demonstrating some responsibility and a willingness to achieve electoral success rather than continue with their infantile tantrums.

Cameron is fooling no one but himself.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/emb-0000-eu-referendum-david-cameron-closes-in-on-deal-to-allow-red-card-veto-on-eu-laws-a6847636.html David Cameron closes in on deal to allow 'red card' veto on EU laws Cameron with the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk Cameron, pushing out more meaningless rhetoric for consumption by the Euroskeptiks or so he would like. The EU is never going to agree for 1 country (the UK) to be able to "opt out" of European rules, regulations and laws when the objective of the EU is for greater political and economic integration.   Cameron, is seeking a way to present his "deal" as salvation for Britain, allowing the UK to remain part of the European Union. He would claim the same "victory" even if the "deal" was no more than a blank sheet of A4 paper, which of course it actually is.

"Creative accounting" from Osborne and Cameron attempting to mask defeat.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/eu-surcharge-osborne-accused-of-accounting-trick-to-claim-cut-in-eu-bill-9847485.html EU surcharge: Osborne accused of accounting trick to claim cut in EU bill The really incredible thing which never ceases to amaze me, is that these lying, cheating hypocritical career politicians, expect and believe that the rest of us will accept their weasel words as the truth. They claim a "victory" when all they should feel is shame.

The lightweight political hypocrite loses another debate.

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/04/02/farage-wins-polls-second-eu-debate_n_5078850.html Nigel Farage Wins Second European Union Debate Against Nick Clegg      Farage UKIP and Clegg LibDem  I did not watch last night's (2nd April) second debate. In fact I did not watch the first debate either as both are centered on a specific policy issue, rather than seeking to inform "the voters" of the wider political differences. However, having made that clear, I did watch news coverage on television, (never a completely reliable source of information) and read various news articles and discussed the issue friends.  The consensus of opinion, from all these sources, is that Farage won the debate, with Clegg coming a poor second. Reliance on very poor jokes and personal jibes is not a good substitute for balanced and reasoned political argument. The audience should be left with the view that all though we may not agree with the policy, the arguments for ...

Cameron vows to cut red tape

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/crazy-rules-dreamt-up-by-whitehall-bureaucrats-are-to-be-scrapped-david-cameron-to-announce-at-fsb-conference-9087100.html   The Government is to dispose of or change thousands of "crazy" rules affecting businesses David Cameron to announce at FSB conference   Since time immemorial, (well it certainly seems like it), politicians of all political persuasions have been promising to "cut the red tape and get businesses moving". A very laudable proposition which is always well received by the press and media. The problem with this pompous posturing, is that as fast as the scissors or shears or whatever are slashing away at the tangled undergrowth and roots of the "red tape", some faceless Whitehall civil servant is frantically scribbling away with his quill putting into "Whitehall speak" written word, the latest spouting of his Ministers whim, dogma, pet theory or harebrained sche...

Threats and blackmail from a multinational company

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/01/15/ford-cars-eu_n_4602115.html?utm_hp_ref=uk  Car Giant Ford Warns Britain Not To Leave European Union Ford Motors.   I may not be alone in becoming very hacked off with some multinational company or other or this bank or that bank or all the other business organisations warning us not to leave the European Union. Who actually runs this country? Whether the people of the United Kingdom are pro Europe or anti Europe, remains to be seen but it is certainly not the place of some fat cat business executive on his or her over inflated salary and raking in the annual six figure (or even plus) bonus to attempt to dictate whether or no this country leaves the EU.

European Union Trade deal with United States, surrendering to multinational corporations

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/british-sovereignty-at-risk-from-euus-trade-deal-uk-in-danger-of-surrendering-judicial-independence-to-multinational-corporations-warn-activists-9057318.html British sovereignty ‘at risk’ from EU-US trade deal The domination of Europe, the Middle East and ultimately the world, by the use of corporate and where necessary military force, is and always has been at the top of the American agenda. We need only to look at the Neo Conservative manifesto and to observe how American influence has become more dominant in many parts of the world since the end of the Second World War, to appreciate the threats associated with further appeasement to the American dream.   As Churchill once said in the 1930's, in relation to "Mein Kampf", when commenting on the speculation by the Chamberlain Government about the intentions of Hitler, "Why gaze into the crystal ball when you can read the book?"

More "advice" from across the pond.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/politics/barack-obama-piles-pressure-on-david-cameron-over-eu-exit-8458116.html "I am telling you....."   Many, if not most, Americans cannot resist poking their noses into other peoples affairs, and offering unwanted and unwelcome "advice" on every matter imaginable, especially when their "advice" is to suit and promote their own agenda's. In this respect, Obama is no exception apart from the fact that his "advice" is usually veiled in some sort of threat because he is, after all, described as the "most powerful man in the world". Note the use of the word "powerful" rather than "intelligent". The omission  is significant. Presidents (not only the present incumbent) and their State department sycophants, consider it their duty as the self appointed "guardians of the world" to throw in their opinions and  platitudes on any matter. When they couple thi...

American "advice" on European membership.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/obama-administration-warns-britain-to-stay-in-the-european-union-8444789.html Obama administration warns Britain to stay in the European Union Philip H. Gordon: Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Britain risks damaging its relationship with America and being sidelined in the international community if it leaves the European Union, the Obama administration publicly warned today. Americans, or at least a good number of Americans, seem to have a great problem in keeping their noses out of other peoples affairs. This time it is the turn of us, "the Brits", to come under the spotlight and to receive the guidance, advice, or perhaps more accurately the "warning"  instructions, from the great American busybody to dismiss any thoughts or suggestions of having a referendum on the question of European membership, and to remain within the European Union. Now personally, I believe that contin...
