Resignation on a matter of principle

http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/aug/05/warsi-attacks-morally-indefensible-stand-gaza-quits-coalition Warsi attacks 'morally indefensible' stand on Gaza as she quits coalition and says that Cameron has lost moral authority Sayeeda Warsi   I have never been a great admirer of Sayeeda Warsi. In fact, on a number of occasions, I have been very critical of the woman. However, on this occasion, she is absolutely right. As all of the rest of the world, well almost all, condemns Israel and its aggression on Gaza as being "disproportionate", "immoral" or even illegal, The government of this country, led by Cameron and some other Bullingdon Club former members, can only bring themselves to mutter a few weasel words of criticism as their LibDem coalition partners come out of the woodwork and agree with Miliband and the Labour Party, that Israel has gone too far. George Osborne The performance of Osborne and Justine Greening on televisi...

The stain of Guantanamo Bay remains

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/us-soldier-held-by-taliban-in-afghanistan-freed-after-five-years-9467018.html US soldier held by Taliban in Afghanistan freed after five years    Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. captured since 2009   Best wishes to Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl on being released. However, it is a great shame that the media and world public opinion does not get as aroused about the detainees incarcerated without trial in Guantanamo Bay prison. Some inmates have been incarcerated in Guantanamo for over 12 years, without trial or legal representation. Guantanamo Bay detention camp   While this stain on civil liberties and human rights remains in operation, we should not become overly excited about the release of one Taliban prisoner.

My memories of Tony Benn

There is a theme running on “Facebook” today, (Saturday 15th March 2014 and started by Isobel Waby, a “Facebook” friend), under the general heading of “My memories of Tony Benn”. I would like to add my personal memory to that theme. Anthony Neil Wedgwood "Tony" Benn , PC 3 April 1925 – 14 March 2014, (formerly 2nd Viscount Stansgate). Tony Benn In the late 1970's and 1980's, I was Chair of the Basingstoke CLP. During one of the election campaigns of that period, Tony was invited to speak at a public meeting in support of the party in the constituency. On the nominated day, he duly arrived accompanied by Michael Meacher MP and we proceeded to the meeting. Tony always enjoyed speaking directly to the people, either standing on a box at some demonstration or as in this case a public hall. This day was no exception and the large hall was full almost to capacity with people standing at the rear, together with a good representa...

Lessons will be learned ? Again.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/18yearold-woman-charged-with-death-of-baby-8862749.html 18-year-old woman charged with death of baby All those "lessons to be learned" from other cases going back over many years appear to have been disregarded again. I am sure that from this latest case, the facts will be examined (again) and the subsequent enquiry will report (again) that many factors were missed and that lessons will be learned (again). An appalling catalogue of failures in the Health Services, the Social services, the police and other bodies have plagued our society for far too long. It may well be that "the systems" contribute to the failures, but the systems are designed and operated by real people who frequently hide behind the excuse of systems failures for their own incompetence. Where people fail they should be removed from their positions, and not allowed to avoid their responsibilities with an apology and the cliche of lessons wi...

Another contribution from Blair.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/tony-blair-on-syria-ed-miliband-was-wrong-on-intervention-in-civil-war-8801281.html Tony Blair on Syria: Ed Miliband was wrong on intervention in civil war Tony Blair in a typical pose Blair! For crying out loud shut up !! You lied and got us into Iraq. You lied and got us into Afghanistan. You have been trying for as many years you have been a politician, to tie us to Uncle Sam's coat tails to follow whatever instructions they may issue. You stopped the criminal investigation into the BAE Saudi Arabia arms scandal. Your entire political life has been one long opportunistic journey for the advancement of Tony Blair at the expense of all opposition, criticism or principle. Lies, deceipt and hypocrisy to advance your own ego and personal wealth. Why on earth should should anyone listen to your discredited rhetoric now?
