Dave Brubeck Dies at 91 Many years ago, one of the School Rules printed in a little blue book containing, it seemed, hundreds of other rules, read “No boy make smoke on or anywhere near the school premises.” One of the masters at the school a Mr. Scarlet, known to all the boys from the 1st year onwards as “Will”, was a little more progressive than most and allowed boys to smoke, at lunch times on Thursday, in one of the rooms in the Annex Hut 3, away from the prying eyes, of other masters and the head. The reason for this furtive behaviour was that “Will” ran a “Jazz appreciation society” and would allow boys to smoke in exchange for listening to and discussing aspects of Jazz. After a while, the Jazz became more attractive and while still enjoying a “Senior Service”, I could listen to and enjoy music from people like Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) and the others including, my lifelong favourite Dave Brubeck. Comment on a matter of public interest Yesterday, (Tuesday 4th December 2012) I published a comment under the heading of “Ending the media speculation” which was my reflection on the media and television coverage of the announcement that the Duchess of Cambridge is pregnant. It seems that there are many people who, as would be expected, do not share my opinion of the reporting of this event. That is understandable, and I have no issues with those who have a view on royalty which differs from my own. Economic crisis, government cuts, austerity, heat or eat dilemma for many people, Palestine, War mongering Israel, climate change and all the other issues which should demand our attention rather than the diversion of an unhealthy obsession with matters "royal". I for one do not want hourly updates on the condition, breakfast menu, afternoon visitors etc of a pregnant woman for the next six or seven months, as so beloved reporting from our television and printed "media".
