American airstrikes supporting Iranian backed militia, who are supporting Iraqi government forces, who are opposed to Iran, who supports Bashar Al-Assad in Syria, who is opposed by the United States who supports the Free Syrian Army, who opposes Bashar Al-Assad and the Islamic State, who are also opposed to Bashar Al-Assad and the Iraqi government, who incidentally are sending Iranian backed militia's with American air support, to fight the Islamic State fighters.
Confused? So are they.
