Tory Brexit rebels inflict major defeat on Theresa May
The conservative civil war got a whole lot hotter during yesterdays debate and last nights vote. Screaming at each other across their benches with shouts of "rubbish" or "sit down", tempers became even shorter as the debate wore on.. Accusing Kenneth Clarke of misleading the House, Marcus Fysh was drowned out in howls of protest from other "remainers" demanding that he withdraw the comment. For the conservatives and the government, things went from bad to worse as the animosity became more frenzied and even more hostile. The government lost the vote and the amendment was carried.
No sooner had the Deputy Speaker finished saying "The Ayes have it" than the row erupted into corridors of Westminster with Nadine Dorries hysterically screaming that, "They (the rebel conservative members) should be deselected and never allowed to stand as members of Parliament again", while numerous reports emerged of conservative whips bullying and threatening members and in at least one instance reducing a female conservative MP to floods of tears.Which ever way you look at it, behavior of that description is completely unacceptable, and the "Whip" or "Whips" involved should be exposed and disciplined. The recriminations and hostility has not abated overnight and is now reflected on the front pages of the National Press. The usual suspects particularly the Mail, Telegraph and Express compete with each other to discredit the "Rebels" and even to challenge their patriotism and real motives.
Theresa May flies to Brussels to continue negotiations with the other 27 EU members, very much aware of the open warfare within her party and within her government, that she leaves raging behind her. She is aware of this turmoil and so are the other member states of the European Union.
