The "Friends of Syria" meeting in London yesterday, (Tuesday 22nd October) broke up without any agreement in respect of the way forward. In fact one of the "friends", Saudi Arabia, is threatening to withdraw from the group largely in response to the failure of the American dominated clique to take any form of military action against the Syrian government and to be rather reticent in their support of the rebel groups in terms of hardware and weapons.
This reticence is understandable in so far as the "Friends of Syria" support only part of the opposition to President Assad and are still faced with the problem which they have faced since the start of the civil war. That is, where there are hundreds of "opposition factions" which in many cases are fighting with each other rater than against the regime forces, how do you ensure that your supplies of weapons and other aid, together with your military strikes, actually assist those elements of the opposition which you consider to be the "good guys"?
The bottom line is that the much heralded conference in Geneva scheduled for next month now seems in some doubt with the threat of Saudi Arabia to withdraw from the clique and with Ahmed Jarba, president of the pro western groupings within the opposition, seeming to set pre conditions for Geneva by insisting that President Assad must be removed from office. This quagmire of conflicting views and the hidden agenda's of many of the participants, indicates that the Syrian civil war is no nearer to being resolved than it was 12 months ago.
