Manning's prosecution was never more than a temper tantrum from the American government, because someone had the audacity to tell the truth and expose government and military wrong doing. The American administration was embarrassed, furious and vindictive in its compulsion to put Manning on trial and press for the severest punishment possible. Manning was to be made an example of, a lesson for any other person who may have some "problems" with American policy or action and consequently seeks to expose excesses and wrong doings carried out by the government in the name of "peace and freedom". A similar fate would await Assange in the event that American threats and bullying should ever succeed in achieving his extradition. Manning, Assange and more recently Snowden are targets because they exposed the wrong doings of the American government and not because they were spies for a foreign government.
