Syria: air attacks loom as Britain and US pledge to use force within two weeks
Intelligence on targets would come from pilotless drones patrolling the skies above Syria and special forces on the ground. |
For
many months prior to the start of the Second World War, the German
press and media, had conducted a campaign of distortion and myth
essentially directed at Poland, with the objective of justifying
their subsequent aggression against that country, culminating with
the invasion of September 1st 1939, and instigating, what became the
deadliest conflict in human history, with an estimated 50 million to
85 million fatalities.
The
“art” of propaganda, was described in Mien Kampf with the words
“The art of
propaganda consists precisely in being able to awaken the imagination
of the public through an appeal to their feelings, in finding the
appropriate psychological form that will arrest the attention and
appeal to the hearts of the national masses. The broad masses of the
people are not made up of diplomats or professors of public
jurisprudence nor simply of persons who are able to form reasoned
judgement in given cases, but a vacillating crowd of
human children who are constantly wavering between one idea and
another.”
and in
another passage
From the general tone of much of today’s press and media, it would be understandable for one to think that they had somehow been transported in time and were reading the newspapers of August 26th 1939 at a Berlin street news stand. The only subtle difference, is that references to Poland had been transformed in references to Syria.

I have argued in previous posts, that the United States, the United Kingdom and latterly France have been itching to become involved in the conflict since it began two years ago. Whatever covert motives other powers may have for intervention, this is a civil war with its roots going back to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the subsequent division of land in the Middle East, essentially by the French and Great Britain using straight lines across the sand to denote borders, with no recognition of ethnic, cultural or tribal differences.
Since WW2 of course a complex situation has been made infinitely worse by the "Western powers" imposing and supporting "friendly"governments and regimes in countries across the region, notwithstanding the fact that such regimes are invariably despised and unwanted by the majority of their peoples.Consequently, oppressive military dictatorships have been established to ensure that the country remains "on side" with the West or has it has become known as "the International Community".
Today's clamour in the press, for intervention against the Syrian government, is no more than part of an orchestrated campaign to create public acceptance of the proposition, that military action is the only way forward, that the Assad government are the bad guys and that we must act now to end the conflict.
The outcome of course will be fundamentally different. The motives and targets may have changed since 1939 but the method of creating the hysteria remains the same, albeit with a few subtle differences and with the utilisation of 21st century technology.
On 26th August 1939, World War 2 was just six days away. How will history record the events of 26th August 2013 and the next six days ?
