The recognition of Jerusalem as the capital and now acceptance of sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
US to recognise 'Israel's Sovereignty over the Golan Heights'
Israeli forces captured and occupied the Golan Heights from Syria during the 6 Day War of 1967. Since then, the Golan has been under Israeli occupation. In 1973 during the Yom Kippur War, Syrian forces briefly recaptured the Golan before being forced back by an Israeli counter attack which reoccupied the area resulting in an occupation which persists today. In 1981, Israel passed the Golan heights Law, which effectively annexed the area, extending Israeli laws, jurisdiction and administration to all of the Golan occupied territory.
During the 46 years of occupation, numerous United Nations resolutions critical of the Israeli government continuing occupation of the heights have been ignored except for the creation of a UN "Buffer Zone" in 1974. With the exception of the United States, the International Community has condemned the continuing occupation and the annexation which has never been internationally recognised or accepted.
Following the recognition by the United States, of Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel, (which the International Community has again never accepted), President Trump has announced that the United States will recognise Israel's "sovereignty" over the Golan Heights in yet another move which defies the authority of the United Nations and widening the chasm between Israel and the United States on the one hand and world opinion on the other. It is clearly evident that since the creation of Israel in 1948, the United States has been the greatest international supporter of Israel. from being the first nation to recognise the new state, to using its UN Security Council veto, to block any resolution critical of or hostile towards Israel and its actions.
The continuing occupation of Palestinian territory is an International scandal which over the past 46 years, the United States has done nothing to address. Even the "Peace Process" and the "Two State Solution" are no more than empty rhetoric paying only lip service to the illusion that the United States has any intention of resolving the Arab Israeli conflict. The recognition of Jerusalem as the capital and now acceptance of sovereignty over the Golan Heights, fuels an already volatile situation in the area and internationally.
