Philip Hammond refuses to back Theresa May as Conservative leader into the next election
As
predicted, the "truce" between the warring factions of the
conservative cabinet and party is coming apart. What was not
predicted however, was that the peace agreement would last only for a
few hours after Theresa May's Florence speech, which the cabinet, the
parliamentary party and the party generally were supposed to be
"united behind". The (Sunday) papers, reveal a very
different story. In the few short days since Friday, the usual
supporters in the press have reversed their traditionally
unconditional support for conservative party unity and the party
leader, to expose and highlight divisions in the cabinet and open
warfare within the party. A few of this mornings, (Sunday's)
headlines reveal the extent of the political carnage tearing the
government to pieces.
Daily
Mail: Its all out war
Sunday
Times: Inside story of Tories at war.
Sunday
Telegraph: Boris sets "Red Lines" on Brexit. Cabinet
divisions on transition are laid bare.
Sunday
Express: Boris. I saved Brexit.
Observer:
Johnson
forced May’s hand on EU, claim Tories as cabinet truce unravels
Today,
(Monday) there is little change in the headlines
as the Mail screams:
Tory
civil war over Brexit rages on as allies of
Hammond brand Boris Johnson 'simple
minded'
echoed
by:
The
Metro: PM
Tries to keep lid on revolt
The
I: David Davis, the Plan to become PM.
The
Telegraph: Boris, Simple minded on Brexit
The
Guardian: Hammond raises further doubts about
May's future as Tory leader
The
country and those in Europe watching the shenanigans
in and around Westminster, could be excused for thinking that not
only is the United Kingdom a laughing stock around the corridors of
power in Brussels, but is also a rudderless nation, bereft of
government leadership and without any credible alternatives within
cabinet who may be able to resolve the crisis which is tearing apart
cabinet, government and conservative party members and supporters.
The
governments position on Brexit is muddled and confused and moreover
changes regularly, almost by the hour in fact. These "policy"
changes and reversals are made only to placate the latest criticisms
from one or other of the numerous factions within the conservative
party. This is not leadership, as May would have us believe, it is a
continuing appeasement to which ever side is shouting the loudest at
any given time. What everybody knows however, but few will admit,
this whole constant argument and division has little to do with the
European Union or the United Kingdom's exit "strategy". It
has everything to do with the maneuverings and tactics of the
individuals and their various camps, who are positioning themselves
to depose Theresa May and then become the next leader of the
conservative party and, ipso facto, Prime Minister of the United
Kingdom.
The
great question, affecting every man, woman and child (even those not
yet born) is being devalued and ignored by a bunch of self serving
politicians of the conservative party, who are obsessed with their
own childish behaviour and antics in the "leadership challenge"
at the expense of resolving the Brexit issues.
The
country can ill afford this juvenile exhibition at this time in our
history. The country demands leadership and resolution of the Brexit
issues. The conservative government are incapable of providing the
necessary control and guidance and must stand aside before doing more
damage to the country and to the institution of government.
