The most shambolic conference speech in memory.
The Conservative Party Conference finally came to a close yesterday (Wednesday), much to the relief of the Representatives in Manchester, party members around the country, Conservative MP's, Conservative Central Office and not least of all Prime Minister Theresa May herself. What had been heralded as the launch pad for the revitalised Conservative Party after the disastrous general election of June last, turned out to be nothing more than a few announcements of "policies" taken from the Labour party manifesto, diluted in an attempt to pass them off as conservative. Quite "Labour Lite" in fact. A "Cap on energy prices" (though no detail on how the cap would be enforced), building new council and low cost houses (though at around 5,000 per year for 5 years, woefully short of the 1.5 million required now), capping tuition fees (when Labour will abolish fees completely) more nurses and doctors for the NHS (but no "additional" funding to pay for them) and a few other policy options which will no doubt be forgotten by the end of next week. The Conference started badly and went rapidly down hill from there culminating in a disastrous keynote speech from Theresa May with coughing fits, interruptions from hecklers, a bizarre presentation of a P45 and ending with a collapsing stage set with letters falling off the slogan.
It was so bad in fact, that Amber Rudd ordered Boris Johnson to "Stand up and clap" to provide a bit of support for the embattled and visibly emotionally shaken Prime Minister on the stage. The clear and irrefutable consequences emerging from these three days in Manchester, are that Theresa May cannot continue as Prime Minister and will stand down and probably before Christmas.
It is already reported this morning that at least 30 MP's in addition to those already known to be planning her removal, are meeting to consider the best way to appoint another leader. The damage done to the Conservative party over the few months since the general election is immeasurable and the credibility of the United Kingdom under the leadership of this weak and vulnerable Prime Minister is completely shattered at home and abroad, but perhaps equally importantly with the European Union at this time of our Brexit negotiations. Before the start of the Conservative conference, the United Kingdom was a laughing stock in Brussels. God only knows what they are thinking this morning.Ministers are reportedly "rallying around Theresa May", but her support outside the cabinet is disintegrating by the second. It is only a matter of time and time has now run out.
