The State visit is more for Trump and his ego than for D Day commemorations.
The quote of the week if not of the millennia, came from a sycophantic onlooker waiting to wave a small paper Stars and Stripes flag and greet Trump when he arrives at the Palace. "Had it not been for America, we would not have won the war" bleated this naive and brainwashed buffoon, on a live television interview. No doubt surrounded by other sycophants with the same views, there is a great misconception in respect to what this visit is all about. Trump could have attended the commemorations of D Day, without the pomp and circumstance of a full blown State Visit.
Quite rightly we, the Americans and the Canadians should remember those who fought and died on the beaches of Normandy in 1944. However it is a quantum leap to stating that "Had it not been for America, we would not have won the war". Not only is this mindset fundamentally flawed, it insults all those people who fought and died on the allied side in the struggle against Nazi Germany between 1939 and 1945. Indeed until June 1941, this country stood alone against a Nazi dominated Europe until the invasion of Russia. I and many others believe that we would have won the war against Nazi Germany without the Americans, but admittedly it may have taken much longer. The role played by Russia in the conflict however, was instrumental and perhaps decisive in defeating the Nazi curse.
