Firstly, I would state, quite categorically, that antisemitism and racism have no place within our party. However, it is interesting to examine the events of the recent history of our party to see the trends of the past 4 years. On the 12th September 2015 Jeremy Corbyn was elected leader of the Labour party with an overwhelming 59.5% of the vote. On the 14th September of the same year, elements within the party, the PLP and the media, began a campaign to discredit Corbyn and the new leadership in order to overturn the decision of the members vote and to replace the leader with one more acceptable to parts of the PLP and the establishment, to return to the "good old days" when the PLP were the sole power base within the party and could dictate to all within, what direction and what policies the party would pursue. To further these ends and in some cases to advance their own leadership ambitions, these elements have employed a variety of tactics, ranging from orchestrated resignations from shadow cabinet to lengthy attacks in the pages of sympathetic "newspapers" and to raising the specter that the Labour party and its leaders are institutionally antisemitic. In this respect, the "antisemitic" offensive has been the most successful, and has been enthusiastically endorsed and encouraged by outside bodies such as the "Friends of Israel", the "Jewish Labour Movement" and others such as "Board of Deputies of British Jews, or the Jewish Leadership Council".
It should come as no surprise to anyone that now as we are moving rapidly towards another General election, the campaign to discredit the Labour party should become even more desperate and hysterical.
The latest allegation to come out of the woodwork centres around a recording of Pete Willsman giving an interview to the Radio station LBC. Willsman alleges that the Labour party has been infiltrated by an Israeli agent organised by the Israeli Embassy. The recording was made in January of this year and has only just been released. Some may raise an eyebrow at the timing of this latest "expose". Willsman's allegation may be just another conspiracy theory, but the way in which his comments have been seized upon by the media and television indicates something very unhealthy in the British political scene. The way in which the Labour party too has reacted to this latest hysterical clamour, is also disturbing. For the past 4 years, the elements referred to herein, have been digging a hole into which they seek to bury the present Labour leadership in order to restore the status quo of previous decades.
In this respect, the Labour party are seemingly over reacting to this current round of attacks and are apparently falling over backwards to appease the critics with suspensions and disciplinary actions before any due process. In this, Falconer has been instrumental in pressing for Willsman to be expelled, which considering Falconer's record on such matters is not surprising. Labour must not be bullied into appeasing the elements intent on destroying the party which we have built over the past few years. We must recognise the motives and tactics of our opponents and we must not jump into the appeasement hole of disciplinary investigations, suspensions or expulsions in or response to antisemitic allegations. It may well be that Willsman's comments are nothing more than another conspiracy theory, but with the present state of the anti Labour campaign, who could guarantee that there is not one grain of truth in what Willsman has alleged?
