Deputy Rob Duhamel said: "A lot of people squander electricity and other fuel sources - energy is probably too cheap for people who waste a lot."
Fuel poverty affects vulnerable households |
I note that Deputy Rob Duhamel Jersey's environment minister, thinks that the cost of energy in Jersey is "too cheap for people who waste a lot."
The natural progression to this argument is to raise the price until such time as it is not too cheap to waste. Unfortunately, the warped economic logic emanating no doubt directly from the energy companies, is that it takes no recognition of those who do not waste energy because they take all the "energy saving measures" they can, but are still unable to afford even the current energy price levels. The solution to this problem is not the "easy option" of never ending price hikes as this only results in more and more "fuel poverty" in society. Alternative forms of energy provision are available, but require more research and investment. The energy companies internationally, have made handsome profits over the years and could well afford an increased investment in all our futures.
