George Entwistle quits over Newsnight fiasco
Seven out of nine front pages that I have looked at this morning, carry the same story. The resignation of George Entwistle it seems, makes all other events pale into insignificance, apart from one front page which headlines the latest "news" from Strictly Come Dancing. The resignation is of course, newsworthy and the way in which the coverage and reporting of recent events associated with child abuse in this country has been put together, should be examined. However, over the past forty eight hours, what was a series of inquiries into allegations of serious child abuse, the apparent incompetence of at least seven police authorities in their investigations at the time, the complicity of various Health Authorities and public institutions, has descended into a navel contemplation exercise at the BBC. I make no apology for again raising the specter of a covert operation, perhaps not planned and created in one smoke filled room, but never the less in existence, to divert attention away from the real issues and direct peoples minds towards the events and personalities at the BBC. We are in danger of sleep walking into allowing people involved in the original crimes and in the subsequent cover up of those crimes, to perpetuate their anonymity and allowing them to bury their evil under very large stones. We must not take our eyes off the ball and allow this to happen by default.
